Cam Peak Walk

3.5 mile circular / 5.6 km

A spectacular short walk over Cam Peak, Cam Long Down and Uley Bury

Highlights: Explore the beauty of the Cotswold escarpment on this Cam Peak and Cam down trail. Enjoy stunning views across the Severn plain on this family-friendly walk, wandering through wildflower-rich grasslands and peaceful woodlands. A must-see in springtime – the bluebells are prolific and stunning!

Parking: Cam Down car park, GL11 5HH. The postcode took us to exactly the right spot. However, the car park is small and was full, but there were spaces on the verge on the lane.

How long does it take? It took 3 hours at a leisurely pace (not including stops for food and rest).

Accessibility: Uneven paths and inclines. Not suitable for pushchairs. Lots of families and young children enjoying the hills.

Eat/Drink: The nearest place for food and drink options is the nearby town of Dursley, 5 minutes drive away.

Facilities: Public toilets available in Dursley

Step by Step:

1. From the car park, head straight up the peak for amazing views of the countryside and Severn Valley.

2. Head down the slope along the wide grassy path, towards the wooded area which joins the Cotswold way and then starts to climb up hill, taking you to the top of Cam Long Down for more amazing views.

3. Continue on the path along the top of the long down. Stick to the Cotswold way, which is clearly way marked.

4. Keep along the path, which is still waymarked the Cotswold Way. The trail leads downhill over a style, through to small fields with styles and then on to a quiet lane that leads to Uley Bury and Hodgecombe Farm.

5. Go left at the end of the lane and left  on to the farm land and head upwards towards the top of Uley Bury.

Keep walking along the well defined path, still waymarked the Cotswold Way, all the way to the top where there is a bench over looking the view and a gate leading to a small car park and a road.

6. Head through the gate and immediately left through another gate along a wide path leading to Uley Bury – and large flat  feild which was an iron age hillfort, which is now a lovely flat expansive meadow filled with daisy’s and amazing views of the Severn valley.

7. When you reach the Bury, head left, through a gate,  along the wide grassy path just below the fenced off Bury.  Follow it halfway round where the views open up again, and you can see a clear, obvious path down.

8. Follow the path down, sticking to the righthand side, and along a mud track all the way down to the road.

9. At the bottom of the track is a road with a signpost and Hyde gate Pet Resort on the corner. Follow the signpost towards Cam, taking care on the country road (it is quiet road).

10. Stay on the road until you see a public footpath sign on the right with a track going up through the feilds again to a gate and back to the foot of Cam Peak, where you can make your way back to the car park.
